Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a noise that is heard in the ears or head, that is not from an external source.  It is often described as a ringing in the ears, but can be a buzzing, hissing or sound like the sea or cicadas! Tinnitus is very common and for most people  it is not a problem.  For some it can be a severe and on-going problem.

While the cause of tinnitus is sometimes unknown, it can be caused by exposure to loud noise, hearing loss, a build up of ear wax, some medications, stress and trauma.  There is no specific treatment for tinnitus but it can be improved with removal of ear wax, or hearing aids if there is a hearing loss.
